Turf TV announced today that it has signed a three year exclusive licence deal to show South African racing in British and Irish betting shops.
Phumelela Gold Enterprises, the SA racing rights company, had previously licensed its rights exclusively to SIS, but from expiry of that deal in Spring 2008, Turf TV will be the only service that will show the best of South African racing. UK interest in South African racing has grown in recent years with more UK owners enjoying lower costs of ownership and training in South Africa. For the LBO market it has become a valuable complementary product to UK racing. It takes place in the same time zone as UK racing, but provides live racing in shops in late morning and through the busy lunchtime period, usually before the first UK races.
Turf TV has told customers it will not be charging extra fees for this additional content.
Alan Morcombe, Executive Chairman of AMRAC, said: "Adding South African Racing is the first step to deliver on our promise that Turf TV would have a broad range of high quality betting content, alongside the best of UK racing. Holding our price, despite the significant additional cost of the content, demonstrates our commitment to offering good value to our customers and the benefits of competition in the LBO market."
Jim Tennant, Group Chief Executive of Phumelela, said: "We have been impressed with the commitment behind Turf TV and we are pleased that it will now become the showcase for the best of South African racing as well as British racing."
